Introduction

CampusIL, Israel’s national digital learning initiative led by the Israel National Digital Agency, set out to strengthen its data-driven decision-making capabilities. With more than 1.2 million learners and over 30,000 courses and Custom Course Experience (CCX) classrooms delivered to date, CampusIL required a scalable and reliable analytics platform to support educators, learners, and policymakers.

The foundation for this effort was Open edX Aspects, an open-source analytics framework designed to transform LMS activity data into actionable insights. While powerful, Aspects in its default form, can
be challenging to run at national scale, requiring careful attention to performance, scalability, and cost-effectiveness.

To address this, CampusIL partnered with MidLink Cloud, an AWS Consulting Partner specializing in cloud migration and modernization. MidLink focuses on delivering scalable, secure, and cost-efficient production-ready and well-architected cloud environments.
Leveraging its expertise, MidLink implemented and optimized Aspects on AWS, transforming it into a robust, cloud-native solution capable of meeting CampusIL’s national-scale needs.

The Challenge

Open edX Aspects provides strong capabilities for learner analytics. However, institutions often encounter challenges when attempting to run it in production. Common hurdles include:

  • Scalability – efficiently handling millions of daily learner events.
  • Performance – delivering timely insights without delays.
  • Operational Complexity – deploying, maintaining, and monitoring large-scale analytics clusters.
  • Cost Optimization – avoiding unnecessary over-provisioning while ensuring stability.

For a national initiative such as CampusIL, with more than 1.2 million registered users, and a scope of Aspects’ database including more than 704.7 million events (representing a small part of CampusIL history, since January 2024 only, and with additional historical data to be added), these challenges risked delaying access to the actionable insights required to inform policy, course design, and learner support strategies.

CCX is an Open edX feature, which allows course creators to create a private, customized version of an existing course for a specific group of students. Using content from the original course, it enables a new schedule or private instance, and is frequently used by organizations/ instructors to run their own private MOOCs or to re-run content for a specific cohort. As part of its roadmap, Open edX plans to allow CCX functionality on top of Content Libraries.

CampusIL relies heavily on CCX to deliver hybrid learning that blends self-paced online study with teacher-led classroom instruction. This approach supports K–12 STEM – an Israeli Ministry of Education priority, aimed at building
a tech-ready workforce.

To further enhance the mechanism, CampusIL developed a unique process for opening a CCX course, which tags the classrooms according to knowledge fields, schools, areas and other data. This metadata is then ingested into Aspects, where it becomes available for reporting, filtering, and analytics across the platform.

MidLink’s Contribution

Making Open edX Aspects Production-Ready

Rather than reinventing the wheel, CampusIL and MidLink built on the strengths of the open-source Aspects framework. MidLink’s role was to harden, scale, and optimize Aspects for production readiness on AWS.

Key enhancements delivered included:

  • Cloud-Native Architecture: Running Aspects on Kubernetes with modern CI/CD pipelines (ArgoCD, GitHub Actions).
  • Dynamic Scalability and Cost-Effectiveness: Auto-scaling ensures the platform flexibly adjusts resources to actual demand, supporting more than 2 million of daily learning events, while maintaining infrastructure efficiency.
  • AWS Well-Architected Foundation: Leveraging AWS Graviton for cost/performance optimization, along with CDN and WAF for secure delivery.
  • Observability and Reliability: Full operational visibility via Grafana dashboards, ensuring performance and stability are continuously monitored.
  • Operational Simplification: Providing a deployment approach that removes barriers to adopting and maintaining Aspects at scale.

This modernization allowed CampusIL to unlock the full potential of Aspects – not just as an open-source framework, but as a production-ready national analytics platform.

Outcomes for CampusIL

The impact of the production-ready deployment is measurable and observable:

  • Enhanced Data-Driven Decision-Making: Raw learning events are transformed into dashboards and visualizations, enabling instructors and administrators to optimize course design, learner engagement, and educational outcomes.
  • Operational Efficiency and Cost Savings: Auto-scaling ensures infrastructure matches workload demand, preventing over-provisioning and enabling cost-effectiveness.
  • Proven Scalability: The platform reliably processes over 2 million learner events per day, across more than 3,000 courses and more than 30,000 opened courses and CCX classrooms – demonstrating national-level scalability – with the largest course having more than 15K blocks (university acceptance test preparation course).
  • Simplified Management & Faster Insights: Cloud-native automation reduces operational complexity, ensuring analytics are delivered quickly and consistently.
  • Observable Performance: CampusIL monitors analytics performance in Grafana, providing continuous evidence of stability, throughput, and growth capacity.
  • Information Security: A strict information security team that defines cross-organizational security requirements and policies, including the implementation of raw-level security and extended permission management, integrated with Open edX.

The Partners Behind the Outcome

“The insights made available to the CampusIL team and its partners enable the maximization of pedagogical investment by identifying which courses are more preferred and which are less so. The more successful courses can be further refined, invested in, and replicated to create future offerings. This directly enhances CampusIL’s ability to optimize its active course catalog, thereby increasing the number of learners and encouraging more active learning. Ultimately, this supports CampusIL’s broader vision of reducing educational gaps across diverse populations.”

Shachar Prizat | CTO at CampusIL of Israel National Digital Agency

"

Key Success Factors

For CampusIL, three factors were critical to realizing the full value of Aspects at scale:

  1. Strategic Deployment: Leveraging MidLink’s expertise to ensure a smooth, optimized implementation on AWS.
  2. Continuous Data Utilization: Actively using real-time insights to drive ongoing improvements in course delivery and learner support.
  3. Scalability Planning: Designing with future growth in mind, ensuring the solution seamlessly scales with demand.

The customer

L1ght is a technology company that specializes in online safety solutions and digital well-being. Their mission is to create a safer and more positive digital environment by addressing the challenges posed by harmful content, cyberbullying, and online toxicity.

As an organization, L1ght is dedicated to developing advanced artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) technologies, to detect and prevent harmful online behaviour. They leverage their expertise in data analysis, natural language processing, and image recognition to provide real-time monitoring and protection against harmful content across various digital platforms.

L1ght’s solutions are designed to assist social media platforms, online gaming communities, messaging apps, and other digital platforms in maintaining a safe and inclusive online experience for their users.

The goal

Migration of L1ght’s current on-premises workload to AWS. The migration involves deploying an architecture that initially replicates the on-premises design and later transitions to an AWS serverless architecture.

Because on premises environments are limited in their ability to scaleup and out in an agile way L1ght would like the new AWS based architecture to enable it to scale fast and automatically but use the pay as you grow method and not pay up front and wait for new compute resources.

The environment must be hybrid and connect to data sources on the on-premises environment, it must be extra secured and cost optimized.

The Plan – solution

MidLink has conducted a deep assessment process in which it fully mapped the customer assets, and understood which of these will be migrated to AWS. Then, MidLink designed a new AWS based architecture according to the AWS 7Rs principles, seven common migration strategies (7 Rs). These strategies are refactor, replatform, repurchase, rehost, relocate, retain and retire. The architecture takes into consideration all the customer goals, including:

  • Easy automated scaling
  • Resilient
  • Secured
  • Cost effectiveness

Since the environment we designed is hybrid (Cloud, On premises), we built a secure strategy to connect the on premises stack to AWS by configuring S2S VPN connection between the workloads.

The implementation

MidLink developed a full IaC (Terraform base) coverage to deploy the AWS-based infrastructure that allows L1ght‘s workload to be hosted both on the AWS cloud and connected to an on-premises database.

By leveraging AWS services and features, such as DMS, RDS and EC2 auto scaling groups L1ght managed to reduce the cost and still serve their customers with no need for over provisioning of compute resources.

More than that by using AWS services like: AWS WAF/Shield, ALBs and multi-AZ deployments, MidLink ensured improved infrastructure agility and security for Seenity. This enables Seenity to scale resources dynamically and respond quickly to changing business demands.

Welcome to our deep dive into monitoring and logging for Amazon Elastic Kubernetes Service (EKS). Amazon EKS is a managed service that makes it easy to run Kubernetes on AWS without needing to install, operate, and maintain your own Kubernetes control plane. It provides the flexibility of Kubernetes with the security and reliability of AWS.

Monitoring and logging in Amazon EKS are not just operational necessities; they are foundational to the health, performance, security and success of any application deployment in a Kubernetes environment. This blog aims to provide you with a comprehensive guide to effectively Observe your EKS clusters.

Why Monitoring and Logging are Essential in EKS

Monitoring and logging in EKS are crucial for several reasons:

  1. Performance Optimization: Identifying bottlenecks and understanding resource utilization.
  2. Security and Compliance: Detecting suspicious activities and ensuring compliance with various standards.
  3. Troubleshooting and Debugging: Quickly identifying and resolving issues within your clusters.
  4. Cost Management: Understanding resource usage to optimize costs.

The Critical Role of Monitoring and Logging in EKS

Monitoring and logging in Amazon EKS are not just operational necessities; they are foundational to the health and success of any application deployment in a Kubernetes environment. Let’s delve deeper into why they are so essential.

Enhanced Performance Optimization

Monitoring allows you to continuously observe the performance of your EKS clusters. By tracking metrics like CPU, memory usage, and network throughput, you can identify performance bottlenecks. This data is crucial for scaling resources effectively and ensuring that your applications run smoothly under varying loads.

Robust Security and Compliance

Logging plays a pivotal role in security and compliance. By maintaining comprehensive logs of activities and changes, you can detect potential security breaches and unauthorized access. These logs are invaluable for forensic analysis in the event of a security incident. Additionally, for businesses subject to regulatory requirements, logging is often a compliance necessity.

Efficient Troubleshooting and Debugging

When things go wrong, as they inevitably do in complex systems, logs are your first line of defense. They provide the granular detail needed to diagnose and resolve issues. Coupled with monitoring, which alerts you to the problem in the first place, logging enables you to quickly pinpoint and fix issues, minimizing downtime.

Cost Management and Optimization

Monitoring helps in understanding resource utilization, which is directly tied to cost. By analyzing usage patterns and identifying underutilized resources, you can make informed decisions about scaling down or optimizing resource allocation, leading to cost savings.

Key Metrics and Logs to Monitor in EKS

Metrics

  1. Cluster-Level Metrics: Node CPU, memory usage, and network statistics.
  2. Pod-Level Metrics: CPU, memory, and storage usage of individual pods.
  3. Application Metrics: Custom metrics from your applications, like throughput and response times.

Logs

  1. API Server Logs: For auditing and security purposes.
  2. Application Logs: Output from the applications running in your pods.
  3. Node Logs: System-level logs from the worker nodes.

Lets Dive into Prometheus, Grafana, and Grafana Loki

Prometheus

Prometheus is an open-source monitoring solution that is particularly well-suited for Kubernetes environments like EKS. It works by scraping metrics from configured endpoints at regular intervals, evaluating rule expressions, displaying results, and triggering alerts if certain conditions are met.

Key Features:

  • Multidimensional Data Model: Prometheus uses a powerful data model and a query language that can leverage this model.
  • Flexible Query Language: Its query language, PromQL, allows for the slicing and dicing of collected time series data in real-time.
  • Autonomous Single Server Nodes: It does not rely on distributed storage; each server is autonomous.
  • Time Series Collection: It stores time series data in memory and on local disk in an efficient format.
  • Alerting and Notifications: Alertmanager groups similar alerts together, reducing noise and preventing alert fatigue. This grouping is based on labels, allowing you to aggregate alerts by severity, service, or any other label.

Grafana

Grafana is an open-source platform for monitoring and observability. It’s widely used for visualizing time series data, like that collected by Prometheus.

Key Features:

  • Rich Visualizations: Offers a variety of charts, graphs, and alerts for your data.
  • Dynamic Dashboards: You can create and share dynamic dashboards that encapsulate a wide range of data.
  • Mixed Data Sources: Allows data to be queried and visualized from multiple sources simultaneously.
  • Alerting and Notifications: Supports alerting based on data thresholds and can send notifications through various channels.

Grafana Loki

Grafana Loki is a horizontally scalable, highly available, multi-tenant log aggregation system inspired by Prometheus. It’s designed to be very cost-effective and easy to operate.

Key Features:

  • Index-Free Logging: Loki does not index the contents of the logs, but rather a set of labels for each log stream.
  • Close Integration with Grafana: It allows you to switch seamlessly between metrics and logs, enriching the observability experience.
  • Efficient Storage: Compresses and stores log data in a highly efficient format.
  • Scalable and Cost-Effective: Designed to be more cost-effective than traditional log systems which index all data.

The Imperative of Alerting in EKS Monitoring

The implementation of a robust alerting system is an indispensable component of monitoring Amazon Elastic Kubernetes Service (EKS). Effective alerting ensures that potential issues are promptly identified and addressed, thereby safeguarding the performance, reliability, and security of the Kubernetes environment. It acts as a critical line of defense, enabling teams to respond swiftly to anomalies before they escalate into more significant problems. By integrating sophisticated alerting mechanisms, such as those provided by Prometheus Alertmanager, teams can benefit from tailored, context-rich notifications. This targeted approach to alerting not only enhances operational efficiency but also plays a pivotal role in maintaining system integrity and ensuring a seamless user experience. Ultimately, in the dynamic and complex landscape of EKS, where the stakes of system downtime or breaches are high, the strategic importance of a well-orchestrated alerting system cannot be overstated. It is not just a tool for incident response but a cornerstone of proactive infrastructure management and a catalyst for continuous improvement in the ever-evolving domain of cloud-native technologies.

Conclusion

Effective monitoring and logging are vital for the smooth operation of applications running on EKS. By following the best practices and leveraging the right tools, you can ensure high performance, security, and reliability of your Kubernetes applications. Remember, monitoring and logging are not set-and-forget tasks; they require continuous attention and refinement.

Tools like Prometheus, Grafana, and Grafana Loki offer powerful capabilities to capture, analyze, and visualize the vast amount of data generated by Kubernetes environments. By leveraging these tools effectively, you can gain deep insights into your applications and infrastructure, leading to more informed decisions and a robust, resilient operational posture.

Stay ahead in your DevOps journey by keeping your EKS monitoring and logging strategies up-to-date and optimized. Happy Kubernetes managing!
